Purpose of a Charge Air Cooler

CACs are mainly used to cool the air entering the engine to increase the air density. Dense air contains more oxygen which improves the combustion process of the engine and increases its efficiency. If CACs are not maintained properly, it will cause problems in the system, including:

Improper combustion
Reduced engine power
Low fuel efficiency
Damage to the engine

CAC Failure Modes

Restricted external air throughput caused by fouling on external surfaces and between cooling fins resulting in reduced cooling performance.

The accumulation of particulates in the air side charge air cooler tubes can cause them to be blocked, leading eventually to leakages in the seals and joints. This will also choke the engine of the intake air.

The accumulation of calcium and other debris in the waterside tubes which restricts coolant flow, and in turn stops the CAC from cooling efficiently.

Mechanical damage caused over time by impacts from environmental debris, unmaintained tools, or machines.
